ΔG° from E°

UKChO Round 1 · UKChO Round 2 · IChO · unreviewed

ΔG° = −nFE°.

Worked example

A cell reaction transfers 4 electrons and has E° = 1.47 V. Calculate ΔG°.

  1. 1. Gibbs energy and cell potential: solve for ΔG°

    ΔG∘=−nFE∘\Delta G^\circ = -nFE^\circ

    = −567.3 kJ mol⁻¹

Answer: ΔG° = −567 kJ mol⁻¹

Method

ΔG° = −nFE°. A positive E° means a spontaneous cell (negative ΔG°).

Formulas used

  • Gibbs energy and cell potential

    ΔG∘=−nFE∘\Delta G^\circ = -nFE^\circ
